One of the strangest things happened in 2019: I found out there was a vineyard in New Jersey that was growing Petite Sirah. (This grape, by the way, is not related to Syrah. In France is sometimes also goes by the name "Durif.") The vineyard is called Woodland Farm, and after speaking with Jim Quarella who manages the vines there, I took a chance. And what a surprise it was!
This fruit was exciting from the moment we destemmed it and did our first pumpovers. Extremely inky colors and massive tannins. A nice aging in French oak barrels has tamed the tannins somewhat, but they are still very much present. I'm excited to find this unexpected variety growing so close to us, and I am playing around with the idea of trying some ourselves at some point. Enjoy this wine with very hearty red meat dishes.
