Our 2018 Malbec was one of our quickest selling red wines I've ever seen here at Allegro. We had never had the opportunity to make a Malbec wine, and 2018 was a challenging vintage, but the response was incredible. The 2019 vintage was more of a classic East coast vintage with nice warmth in the summer with the requisite rain events (luckily not that many at harvest.) The grapes were grown at Martha Clara Vineyards on Long Island by our friend Jim Thompson and his crew. Jim's been growing grapes for around forty years, and he always delivers clean solid fruit.
Malbec's ancestral home is Bordeaux, although recently Argentina and other similar places have pushed great examples of the variety. Normally Malbec places a supportive role, but the smoother tannins and great fruit character is something we like to think can stand on its own. We fermented the Malbec in tanks and aged it in French oak barrels for nine months. This isn't your familiar Malbec from South America, but rather one with depth of flavor and a zest for food pairings.
